3 days in Calcutta

Calcuta, Calcutta, Kolkata,... anyway... I didn't see much of the city but I certainly had much fun over there. The train ride from Varanasi only took 19 hours, woohoo!! the train was 4 hours late and I was back again in the sleeper class, so rough bed again! When I got there I was pleased to discover that my train-mates were an old French lady, a Peruvian lady and 3 Israeli guys, and so we talked for a while, we shared stories and we even played chess and drank chai. At night the train was soooo full of people that it was a mission just to go to the toilet and in the morning people came selling all different kinds of stuff, from drinks, food, sweets, toys, it was like being back in Main Bazar!
Once in Calcuta we all headed off towards Sadder St. the place to find a cheap hotel, but not so cheap and very dirty, but for two nights it was good enough for me: the hotel Diplomat, that first night the basin in the bathroom broke down, the fan broke, the toilet seat broke and the shower drain collapsed and you know what... I just couldn't care less, the beauty of India is that you just get used to everything! like for example that I wanted to send a parcel home but the Post Office was on strike, I wanted to take a cab to the airport... and the taxis too were on strike! But no problem, kuchi milega, everything is possible. I was the lucky person to send the ONLY parcel allowed for the day (the packaging system was very echological, they just wrapped a cloth around the things I wanted to send and then the guy sewed it up, nice, it just looked like a bag of rice...), as for the airport I just found a neigbour of the hotel with a car that took me there for a bit more than a taxi ride (the bastard! ;) )
Calcuta is a very modern city compared to all the places I have been in India, and there is lots of shopping malls and also old colonial buildings that add up to the charm of the city, but still retains the Indian character, because of the people.
Only two days after I arrived I tool a plane to another country and yet another adventure... Thailand!

Hi Claudia, cuando leas ésto ya estarás en Thailandia, seguramente ya te habrán dado un masage y te habrás aseado como es debido. Dicen que ahí las gentes son más limpias. Ya nos contarás.
Besos de tus padres.
